Many of us think that if we want to lose weight then we should skip breakfast. After all, if we don’t eat breakfast that means we’re consuming fewer calories. Right?
Ironically, one of the keys to losing weight and increasing your metabolism is to eat a hearty and healthy breakfast. And one of the simplest things you can do to increase your energy during the day is to eat breakfast.
Activate Your Body’s Thermal Switch
When you eat breakfast you activate your body’s “thermal switch,” which helps you burn fat and produce energy throughout the day. Studies show if you eat breakfast you are more alert and you perform better at work. Breakfast eaters also show less fatigue and are usually leaner than those who skip breakfast.
Dr. Sarah Leibowitz is a Research Associate Professor at The Rockefeller University in New York City. She focuses her research on the neurobiology of substance abuse and addiction, most commonly alcohol and nicotine, recently adding to her studies palatable fat- and sugar-rich foods that also appear to have addictive-like properties. According to Leibowitz, when you skip breakfast you are also more likely to gorge on high fat and high sugar foods at night.
Many of us can attest to this in our own struggles with gaining and losing weight. If we skip meals throughout the day, we often lose control when it’s finally time to eat. Instead of gulping a cup of coffee and running out the door, make time for a quick and healthy breakfast.
Shake, Shake, Shake to Eat Breakfast
One great kitchen tool that can be essential for an on-the-go breakfast is the blender. Your morning smoothie can never be boring by adding a variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as protein from greek yogurt or your choice of milk – like dairy, soy, almond, rice or cashew – as well as any number of add-ins. Or grab a glass of one of the fabulous flavors of Shakeology for breakfast!
