Having Trouble Sleeping?

If you’re having trouble sleeping, whether it’s waking up in the middle of the night, can’t fall asleep, or just having nightmares that don’t allow you to get a good night’s sleep, there are ways to help.

Don’t keep a T.V. in your room. This will make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. If you need white noise, get a small noisy fan or one of those sound machines. There are a lot of apps on Android and IPhone that also offer white noise to help you sleep.

Before you go to bed, make a to-do list for tomorrow. Check off all that you did for today as well. This will help stop that rapid fire list going through your head just as you’re about to fall asleep.

Don’t go to bed if you’re not tired. If you can’t fall asleep within 15-30 minutes, you’re not tired enough for bed. The key to making sure you get a good night’s sleep is to suffer the first few nights by waking up at the same time every day so you can go to bed at the same time every day. This will set your sleeptime clock.

Another trick that a friend told me about is if you wake up and it’s any time after 5am, get up. If you fall back asleep, you will just wake up even more tired when your alarm goes off.

There are also some herbs out there that can help you sleep. One of my favorites is Valerian Root. If you’re having a particularly bad week like I just had (same recurring nightmare every night), take 1,000 mg about 30 minutes to an hour before bed. It’ll take a few nights to work because you have to build it up in your system, but it works very well. While I still have the same nightmare, it’s lessened each night in intensity, and I have a feeling I won’t have the nightmare tonight. Once I have a few nights with no nightmares, then I will stop taking the Valerian Root. For some people, they might need that extra boost to help them sleep, but if it’s a particular problem, like nightmares, you only need to take it for a week or two. Oh yeah, the bottle and pills smell horrible, like sweaty socks or something.
