I have five piercings in my ears. Two in the right ear, and three in the left. Four of them are lobe piercings, and one is a cartilage piercing. I’ve always wanted to get other types of ear piercings, but my piercings are prone to infection.
They get red, swollen, hard and the skin peels. They bleed if the skin gets peeled too far. They become very itchy, and I have to take my earrings out.
I recently learned I’m allergic to nickel, as I developed a staph infection in my finger because of my ring that had nickel in it. So now I’m wondering if my ‘sterling silver’ earrings are truly sterling silver or that 925 kind where it still has 7% nickel.
I’ve browsed the internet, and I think I may have found a solution. I found this online store (they also do catalog orders) called SimplyWhispersStore.com that specialized in hypoallergenic jewelry. None of their jewelries are made from known harmful metals that are popular among allergy sufferers. I’m going to get an order of small studs to test it out, and if it works, maybe I can gradually add in the other piercings I would love to have in my ear!
The earrings are priced reasonably, so that’s a relief for me because I was afraid I’d have to shell out some big bucks to get real gold or platinum earrings.
I will update you when I get them! Hopefully, it’ll be good news!
UPDATE: Someone asked if I’d tried Claire’s Sensitive Solutions products and I have. In fact that is the pair of earrings in question that caused the current lobe infection. Shortly after writing this blog post, I spoke with Claire’s corporate office via their web site Contact Us link. I let them know they need to label their Sensitive products more liberally, preferably with an exact breakdown of metals and other inactive ingredients.
